Summary of deposit
Zerenkel is an undocumented and endangered language spoken by circa 3000 rural inhabitants of the Guera region of Chad. This project aims to document a range of communicative events associated with highly endangered practices such as marriage rites, which are being lost to the community, and produce a phonology and grammar sketch. Due to a number of factors, the Zerenkel language and culture is under threat. Fortunately, in 2005, members of the community formed an association to develop and promote their language. This project will be undertaken in close collaboration with the community and aims to develop multilingual language and socio-cultural resources for the community.

We produced materials for literacy that people are using to learn reading, writing, calculating in Zerenkel. Specially in this classroom literacy located outside zerenkel land (Bandaro), some Zerenkel are learning their original language because they want to confirm their identity and to be connected to their community. I precised in my report that in Bandaro village, major languages are Dangaleat and Migaama. So the Zerenkel emigrated in this village speak currently those languages and just a few of them try to speak zerenkel language in some circumstances. But now, as we created a center for literacy in zerenkel, they are formally learning their original language without any inferiority complex.

Buffalo and Squirrel made a bet to see which of them is more powerful. They chose to reverse each a tree. Squirrel chose a tree of which it cut the roots the day before without Buffalo’s awareness. Thus, it was very easy for Squirrel to reverse it. When Buffalo, realised that the small Squirrel could reverse a whole tree, has chosen a very big tree that he also intended to reverse. Buffalo gave a violent stroke of horns to the tree, unfortunately it did not succeed in reversing the tree, nor to withdraw its driven horns. Buffalo was blocked to this tree. Squirrel and its children enjoyed its milk for long time until one day, the hyena also discovers the secret. As greedy as hyena is, it went straight to kill Buffalo, but Squirrel’s ruse permitted it recovering the whole meat.
