Rongga is a marginalized small language of south-central Flores, Indonesia This three-year documentation project, based at the Australian National University, aims to set up a comprehensive archive of the Rongga language (Austronesian, Flores Island, Indonesia, around 3000 speakers). A variety of data has been collected as part of the archive. This includes digitised audio and visual recordings, ethnographic notes based on interviews and observations, as well as anthropological or linguistic descriptions.

The project aims to set up a comprehensive archive of the Rongga language and culture as a resource tool containing the core data and references on which further studies, analyses, and practical language-community programs may be based. The three-year project (2004-2006) has produced a variety of data as part of the archive. It includes audio and visual recordings, (ethnographic) notes based on interviews and observations, as well as anthropological or linguistic descriptions. At the conclusion of the project, a grammar and a basic dictionary have been already completed.

This story is about two orphans raised by their uncle. The uncle loved them dearly, but their aunt--the wife of the uncle--hated them very much. Raising the orphans in the family made the life of the uncle miserable as he had to quarrel with his wife almost everyday. The uncle decided to take the children to the forest and left them there. The children were taken care by an old men, and were give a (magic) potion. They grew up as a handsome man and beautiful woman, who then married each other. When they were back to the village, their marriage was regared as a sin, and they were punished to death because of that. Because of the potion, they couldn't be killed and this led to the realisation by the people that one could not take somebody's life. Instead of the death penalty, they were asked to perform a ritual.

This prayer is about the deep sympathy and sorrow of the people because of the death of Jesus, the Messiah. This original recording was done inside the church. The quality of the sound is not good: The speaker (Mr. Yanani) was using a loud-speaker equipment and his voice was badly echoed within the room. Then, the transcribed prayer was re-read by Frans Seda (for a better recording, which resulted in the file used for this session).

This is a joke/funny story, based on the experience of the speaker when she was still a school student. It was about a word in Indonesian, "gaplek" (dried cassava). All the students didn't know the meaning of the work. However, one student confidently raised his hand and told the teacher that he knew its meaning. He said that the meaning was "smelly decomposed fish". This funny story by Edit Anggo Gelang was recorded in the afternoon when there was a family gathering, with neighbours joining in.

This funny story is about a Bajawa person who was arrested but was then release again because he kept laughing and therefore was considered crazy by the Rongga persons who intterogated him. In fact, the Bajawa person couldn't help laughing as the old Rongga persons spoke Indonesian in a funny way, cutting final consonants and mixing up Indonesian and Rongga words. This funny story was recorded during a visit to Wayan's place by Rongga neigbours in Tanarata.
